The Role
The Communications Manager will be part of the Strategy and Strategic Communications Office. This team is responsible for the development and implementation of the Agency’s Communications Strategy, which outlines the Agency’s core messages, as well as the team’s key communications campaigns, with their objectives.
Working within a fast paced, small, highly specialised and international team, the Communications Manager will lead and manage the team, assigning tasks to staff to undertake research and conduct interviews to craft engaging content that targets both internal and external audiences, as well as NATO enterprise stakeholders. The Communications Manager will manage the Agency’s communications presence across a range of channels and tools to drive forward a broad portfolio of on and offline communication activities and events.
In Addition, This Role Will Also
The Communication Manager will develop and implement the Agency’s Communications Plan, and define critical KPIs. The Manager will assign, edit and approve press releases, feature articles and social media content for official NCI Agency communication channels, such as the external website (www.ncia.nato.int), official Agency social media channels (Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook), Intranet (SharePoint platform), weekly newsletter and NITECH (NATO Innovation and Technology) magazine. The Communications Manager will also be responsible for drafting content as needed, as well as crafting speeches for the Agency’s senior executives, the General Manager and Chief of Staff.
- Manage press and media relations; responding to inquiries, delivering effective media campaigns, organizing media events, providing expert advice to Agency staff members on best practices for communications, and directing the production of regular media coverage reports.
- Act as a spokesperson for the NCI Agency as directed by the General Manager or Head of Strategic Communications and Partnership Office.
- Serve as a first point of contact in the Communications Office; acting with tact, diplomacy and experience on a wide variety of issues.
- Recommend, develop, and implement strategic communication campaigns to support the NCI Agency’s Strategic Plan, business objectives and key events.
- Identify target audiences and tailor messages and communication activities to those audiences.
- Evaluate the NCI Agency’s visibility and reputation within the set target audiences and develop recommendations for improvement.
- Establish a close relationship and cooperation mechanism with appropriate NATO Headquarters counterparts (NATO Public Diplomacy Division) to ensure the NCI Agency’s communications align with the wider NATO strategic context.
- Advise the NCI Agency executives, Business Areas chiefs, commanders, and staff members on public relation and reputation building matters; assisting them from a promotional and public relations perspective to prepare for conferences, symposiums, and seminars.
- Act as the NCI Agency senior content manager, overseeing and providing guidance to other staff designated as content managers.
- Where required and directed, liaise with external NATO, governmental and commercial bodies as required in the promulgation of the NCI Agency’s public relations.
You easily establish good relationship and are able to relate to people at all levels. You are a storyteller, able to gather information, verify facts, and organize information in an easy to understand way. You are able to adapt to the pace of the news cycle and enjoy working on breaking news and seeking out information. Further to this you have:
- A Bachelor degree at a nationally recognised/certified University in a relevant discipline (journalism or communications) and at least 6 years of experience in relevant role in journalism, corporate or marketing communications.
- Excellent command of spoken and written English, with a proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Experience assigning stories and managing people, editing their work, managing personnel issues and mentoring your team.
- Familiarity with writing speeches and lines to take for executives.
- Experience in developing an organization’s media response and lines to take for routine media queries, as well as crisis situations.
- Proficiency in the use of major social media platforms and the Microsoft Office Suite, experience in drafting social media content.
- Proven experience in managing successful communications events and campaigns from beginning to end.
- Many examples of press releases and feature articles you have drafted for professional media outlets or organizations.
- Written communications materials, such as articles, for staff at your previous employer.
- Experience working in a dynamic communications or media environment, ideally in a multicultural or multinational setting.
