Subject: Downstream processing of purple bacteria biomass, including development and optimisation of biomass harvesting, stabilisation, sanitization, and characterisation. (Celabor – UMONS ProtMic).

Details about the project:
The PROTEBoost project aims at developing new, healthy, and attractive food ingredients with high protein content from biomass of purple bacteria. A complete and integrated solution will be obtained by 1) optimising the production of microbial biomass rich in high-quality proteins, 2) developing new methods for biomass harvesting, stabilisation, and downstream processing allowing keeping all functional and organoleptic properties of the product, and 3) setting up processing technologies to produce healthy and attractive food products.
Digital technologies will be implemented in the developed process in order to allow easy optimisation and control of both purple bacteria production and food product preparation.
Targeting the development of sustainable production, the project will also implement continuous life cycle assessment that will also serve process optimization during the project.
The project will be performed by a consortium of Belgium partners from ULiège, ULB, UCLouvain, Materia Noval, Celabor, Multitel and will be coordinated by UMONS. The project will start on the 1st of January 2023.
