Job Purpose and Impact

The Fermentation Engineer will conduct research on fermentation and other biotechnology-related areas with a focus on development of new and optimization of existing industrial bioprocesses for food, health, feed and industrial applications. In this role, you will perform entry level research on a multidisciplinary team to develop, plan and execute fermentation experimental designs at lab and pilot scales and effectively communicate results to stakeholders. This position also provides the opportunity to support infrastructure development, unit operation design, process control, automation, in-line monitoring, data management and other technologies.

Key Accountabilities
  • Execute technical work plans for lab and pilot fermentation experiments individually or as part of a team, applying good scientific and laboratory practices.
  • Conduct basic fermentation experiments safely and effectively against project goals with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data.
  • Compile, analyze and interpret various forms of lab and pilot data to support senior level staff to create sound data-driven conclusions.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports and presentations to communicate experimental outcomes and well reasoned recommendations for future work.
  • Support the maintenance and upgrade of process control and automation systems as well as the integration of new data management and visualization hardware and software
  • Handle basic issues and problems under direct supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. Biochemical, Chemical, Bioscience engineering, Industrial microbiology, Biotechnology or Biochemistry) or equivalent experience
  • Fluent level of English
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or other post-secondary degree in biochemical/chemical/bioscience engineering, industrial microbiology, biotechnology or biochemistry
  • Knowledge of microbial physiology, fermentation and biochemical engineering principles relevant to bioprocess development, scale-up and optimization
  • Hands on experience with lab or pilot scale fermentation and downstream equipment
  • Knowledge of fermentor and unit operation design, process control and automation
  • Education or experience with mathematical, statistical and quantification tools (e.g. Python, R, Matlab, Julia)
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and problem solving mindset
  • Several years of related work experience
  • Demonstrated awareness of safety
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English
