1. SUMMARY

Within the Executive Management Division, the Interpretation and Conference Services includes all the components found in established international organisations for the provision of modern conference services, including bookings, planning and coordination, and the provision of technical multimedia support, room preparation and interpretation for all official NATO languages and others on request.

The incumbent will provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from and into English and French for meetings at NATO Headquarters (HQ) and on missions abroad to which she/he is assigned or volunteers for. The incumbent will deliver a faithful rendition of the original speech while being aware of the political and cultural sensitivities. She/he will provide support to the Interpretation Service as a whole and assist in various interpretation-related activities as required. The incumbent will report to a Senior Interpreter & Team Leader (Grade 19).

2. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL
The incumbent must:
  • hold a university degree or equivalent, complemented by proven conference interpretation skills;
  • possess the following minimum levels of NATO’s official languages (English/French): VI (“Proficiency”) in both;
  • have at least 2 years’ experience as a simultaneous conference interpreter, interpreting from English to French and French to English;
  • demonstrate flexibility and strong drive for teamwork and diversity.
DESIRABLE
The following would be considered an advantage:
  • both English and French as mother tongues (‘A’ language);
  • a degree in Conference Interpretation from a recognised institution;
  • be familiar with global political and military affairs, security and defence matters, International Organizations and the relevant terminology.

3. MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES

Expertise Development
Prepare for NATO committee meetings requiring interpretation, on a variety of subject matters that may be politically sensitive or highly complex, such as technical, political, economic, administrative and budgetary matters, using all the available tools developed for and by interpreters. Participate in the Interpretation Service’s training initiatives. Coach young graduates and students, if required.

Planning and Execution
Improve on service delivery and quality by developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of the Organization at large (including processes and procedures, key figures and main issues, the full range of current affairs, budgetary, political, management, defence and military matters).

Stakeholder Management
Engage clients, support staff, management and colleagues constructively to develop and maintain effective working relations, to gather feedback, understand client requirements and actively assist in the Service’s stakeholder management. Participate in the network of Contact Point Interpreters engaging with national delegations, if appropriate.

Information Management
Contribute personally to good circulation of information and ideas within the team of staff interpreters and the Service at large.

Knowledge Management
Play an active part in the overall effort of the Interpretation Service to develop and update glossaries, pool terminology and share corporate knowledge. Follow political and military events that are discussed and negotiated by NATO committees and the related terminology.
Perform any other related duty as assigned.

4. INTERRELATIONSHIPS

The incumbent reports to a Senior Interpreter & Team Leader, under the supervision of the Head of Interpretation and Conference Services. S/he will work on ad hoc Interpretation teams, maintaining close links with all members of the Service. The incumbent will be called upon to service meetings from low-level technical working groups to summits of Heads of State and Government. As such, interpreters come into contact with many senior officials and high ranking military officers and must display impeccable interpersonal skills.

6. CONTRACT
Contract to be offered to the successful applicant (if non-seconded): Definite duration contract of three years’ duration; possibility of an indefinite duration contract thereafter.
Contract clause applicable:
In accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations, the successful candidate will receive a definite duration contract of three years, which may be followed by an indefinite duration contract.
If the successful applicant is seconded from the national administration of one of NATO’s member States, a 3-year definite duration contract will be offered, which may be renewed for a further period of up to 3 years subject to the agreement of the national authority concerned. The maximum period of service in the post as a seconded staff member is six years.
Serving staff will be offered a contract in accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Régulations.
