POSITION PROFILE

Position: Legal Counsel, Data Protection and Compliance
Location: HQ (Zaventem, Belgium)

  • REPORTING STRUCTURE

    • Reports to: Antitrust and Compliance Officer;
    • Preferably based in Belgium (Etex HQ).

  • THE ROLE

  • This position reports directly to the Antitrust and Compliance Officer of the Etex Group. The Legal Counsel, Data Protection and Compliance is responsible for providing sound and pragmatic legal advice and assistance on data protection matters at Group level.
  • The position is responsible for understanding, evaluating and communicating the legal implications, risks and opportunities associated with data protection laws, and should have the willingness to expend to other areas of compliance, while at the same time understanding the business requirements and needs, and ensuring a swift project execution and implementation.
  • The role will form part of the Etex Group’s legal team based at HQ and gives the opportunity to work closely together with key stakeholders (including the Business, Marketing, HR, IT Security, IT Procurement and Treasury).

  • KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

    • Provide sound legal advice with respect to all aspects of data protection laws primarily related not limited to the GDPR both regarding day-to-day questions (e.g., contract review, practical guidance and training) and assisting with the ongoing improvement and simplification of Etex’s GDPR Project (e.g., data mapping, risk assessment and remediation).
    • Close cooperation with key stakeholders (including the Business, Marketing, HR, IT Security, IT Procurement and Treasury) in relation to data protection and compliance matters.
    • Advise on any significant legislative changes relating to data protection laws and an associated assessment of impact upon the business.
    • Assist Antitrust and Compliance Officer (or if need be other members of the Legal Department) in any ad hoc projects principally relating to ethical and compliance matters as defined in Etex’s code of business conduct.
    • Develop close working relationship with Etex legal team members globally under guidance of Antitrust and Compliance Officer and key stakeholders (including the Business, Marketing, HR, IT Security, IT Procurement and Treasury).

  • QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidate must hold a Law degree from one EU Member State,
  • Have a strong understanding of the GDPR and strong interest in data protection laws to be able to assess national specificities whenever relevant including outside of Europe,
  • Candidate must have between 1 to 3 years of experience on privacy and data protection issues, preferably in a top-tier law firm, in-house, and/or a data protection authority,
  • A strong interest for other compliance work is a plus.
  • Fluent (spoken and written) English required; fluency in other European languages would be a plus.
