ICF is looking for dynamic, strategic, and action-oriented business development leader to join ICF’s Europe & Asia Group. This position reports to the Vice President of Business Development.
The ideal candidate will be a proven full life-cycle business development professional with a track record of positioning, pursuing, and winning large, cross-functional, multi-disciplinary contracts related to climate change, and primarily for public sector organisations, including the European Commission.
The candidate will have at least 15+ years of experience working in climate change with a specific focus on selling consulting services to public sector clients (European Commission, UK Government) and commercial customers.
This individual must exhibit exceptional leadership qualities, be well networked with clients, and be highly collaborative. The candidate must excel at the upstream activities of business development, sitting ahead of capture and client offer development. This candidate should have existing relationships globally and especially in Europe and Asia.
We want you to bring your excellent industry and customer contacts and knowledge to open doors, facilitate partnering, and to help craft compelling strategies that drive revenue growth. They should also be able to command a room, lead with credibility, and be able to use analytical, negotiation, and interpersonal and diplomatic skills that lead to productive business relationships.
You will partner with marketing and business/P&L leadership to develop and integrate a business development and marketing approach that meet business needs across the E&A Group, build strategic insights to help identify and capture scaled proposition growth opportunities, and help drive strategy development and execution.
The preferred location of the role will be from our Brussels office in Belgium, though we are willing to consider someone who is based in the UK and willing to travel to the EU on a regular basis.
Specific responsibilities to include:
- Develop new sustainable revenue streams over medium to long term horizons (2+ years) that are consistent with corporate strategic priorities in a manner that takes full advantage of the entire company’s capabilities.
- Oversee major pursuits from inception to win by leading senior level engagement with customers, primes and partners in collaboration with other ICF leaders.
- Support the development of strategies that improve the quality and depth of market and competitor intelligence to influence and enhance win probability
- Provide effective leadership to BD support teams tasked to execute successfully ICF’s capture and client proposal development
- Network extensively with commercial clients and the public sector with insight and intelligence channelled and shared with colleagues through ICF’s BD collaboration platforms (including MS Teams, Introhive, SharePoint, Yammer)
- Be present in the market and a representative senior leader of our firm. Use your knowledge of the industry to position ICF’s point of view in a meaningful and strategic way.
Examples of Tasks:
- Develop deep understanding of target markets, client needs and the competitive landscape; understand and articulate client needs and requirements by analysing client strategies and plans, programming cycle, market size and projected market growth.
- Develop market insights to identify strategic market shifts, opportunities, and risks.
- Identify and tackle emerging strategic growth issues through research, analysis and communicate perspectives / recommendations to business leadership.
- Discover and validate un-served needs, growth opportunities and new markets.
- Leverage this market knowledge to create, prioritise, and execute strategic initiatives.
- Help build business cases for new opportunities and prioritise investments.
- Lead the strategic planning process for climate by working across P&Ls and country offices to identify, analyse and recommend initiatives to support future revenue and profit growth; align recommendations to the overall growth strategy and story; participate in preparing strategic business reviews.
The ideal candidate will possess many of the following specific qualifications and experiences:
Required Qualifications:
- An extensive network within the European Commission, and which may extend to other public sector organisations
- Be able to engage confidently and articulately with stakeholders at a very senior level in client & government organisations/trade bodies etc.
- An experience founded on strategic relationship building and stakeholder engagement with prospect clients, industry bodies, government, media, event organizers & other key stakeholders.
- Strongly externally focused – with reputation & credibility building activity central to the role through regular attendance at industry events, client/stakeholder entertainment etc. – which also facilitates research & learning required to build the bigger picture around the strategic growth opportunity.
- Must have a bias for identifying opportunities and be an exceptional networker
- Be persistent in building on pipeline opportunities, potentially over many years.
- Have the ability & vision to create viable partnerships.
- Minimum of 15+ years of experience in business development focused on selling climate related projects.
- Bachelor’s and/or higher degree in a discipline related to climate change.
- Have long standing personal credibility in tackling climate change.
- Applies a strong client perspective as a driving force behind business decisions.
- See and understand the big picture through an awareness of the past, present and future states, and be able to spot strategic growth opportunities by matching longer term industry need with ICF capability.
- Must be willing to travel globally to attend events and client meetings when needed.
