Team Leader – Protein Sciences

For our client – an innovative biotech in Gent, Belgium that specializes in discovery targeting GPCR conformations – I am looking for motivated and experience scientist to lead their Protein Science team.

You will lead the team using your experience in protein science and structural analysis along with a strong understanding of molecular interactions between protein and small molecules or biologics. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on cutting-edge scientific initiatives.

Your responsibilities:

• Design and implement workflows to purify and characterize soluble and membrane proteins expressed in mammalian, bacterial, and insect cells
• Responsible for implementing protein purification and protein quality assessment using several biochemical/analytical techniques
• Enable active and inactive state GPCR complex structures with in house identified compounds via cryo-EM for structure-based drug design
• Working closely with medicinal chemists and CADD to help advance structure based drug discovery, de novo antibody discovery team to generate ConfoBodies and molecular engineering to integrate the critical gene-to-structure activities
• Stay informed with the latest advancements in cryoEM technologies and techniques, particularly in the context of GPCRs, and actively contribute to structural biology efforts
• Maintain excellent relationships with current structural biology contract research organizations
• Supervising and coaching a team of scientists and research associates
• Leading the integrated discovery activities of projects as a core member of project teams: you will be expected to maintain focus and provide direction to the team members with clear project plans and defined timelines

Job requirements:

• PhD or equivalent experience in a related field, with at least 5 years of experience in a company (Biotech or pharma)
• Proficiency in protein engineering, cell culture, and protein expression in bacterial, insect, and mammalian systems is required
• Prior experience with GPCR purification and structure determination
• Experience in the entire single particle cryo-EM workflow including protein vitrifications to determine high resolution structures of desired conformational states of integral membrane proteins
• Experience in cryo-EM data collection, data processing to generate electron density maps and model building and working knowledge of associated software tools such as CryoSPARC, ChimeraX, Phenix, Coot, or similar
• Proficiency with Alphafold and/or other computational approaches in the design of proteins, structure prediction using homology modeling, molecular dynamic simulations and protein-ligand docking
• Experience with GPCR biophysical/biochemical characterization (such as fluorescence/analytical-SEC, thermostability, ITC, ligand binding, G protein activation) and screening (thermal shift, SPR, AF-MS, NMR)
• Highly collaborative, self-motivated, team-oriented individual
• Strong leadership experience required
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly integrated team environment where accuracy, accountability and timelines are essential
• You are fluent in English and can communicate research results to the team and cross-functional stakeholders across the company
