A day in the life of a Web Developer/Support Manager

For over 4 years, our client has been responding to the learning needs of its more than 20.000 users, Staff and stakeholders of the European Commission’s Directorate General International Partnerships. The online learning portal gathers over 300 training materials in five learning formats: e-learning, webinars, videos, documentation and podcasts.

The Academy constantly broadens its learning offer by developing new e-learning content and updating existing learning materials, both in English and French. The learning resources are adapted to a diverse audience of Member States, International Organisations, Partner Counties, Universities, Civil Society and citizens interested in sustainable development, being developed by services, or in collaboration with partner organisations.

Their Academy is a Moodle-based Learning Management System, which allows enrolling participants, managing a training database, generating activity reports, checking course completion, issuing course completion certificates, etc.

As a Web Developer/Support Manager, you will develop and customizing the main functionalities of the Academy platform, through management of the Moodle software, including programming such as PHP, HTML, JavaScript/jQuery and CSS. They will equally be in charge of plug-in integration and update, data management and the update of Moodle versions and themes.

The main objective is to develop and manage the technical infrastructure of the Moodle-based LMS, focusing on the update of the Moodle version in coordination with the IT team, taking into consideration potential security issues and their prevention or troubleshooting.

Your main duties will be:

• Upgrade Moodle to the newest compatible version, integration of plugins and new version of the interface theme;
• Overseeing Moodle security vulnerabilities and coordinating and implementing the necessary solutions for preventing security breaches;
• Coordination with the IT team on troubleshooting and bug fixing;
• Participation in meetings and collaboration with the IT team concerning the reorganization of the branching model and move to GIT repository
• Coordination of support teams and technical assistance activities to the training team;
• Creating, managing and updating learning resources on the Academy;
• Improving the layout and customization of Moodle LMS on the Academy;
• Elaboration of guidelines and provision of guidance to stakeholders and users, on the use of tools and software for learning purposes;
• Follow-up of service quality by processing feedback from upgrade, quality control and testing.

If you have

• 7 years of professional experience, of which a minimum of 3.5 years in IT-related positions.
• An extensive experience in a similar role, having worked in the management of Moodle platforms for digital learning purposes.
• proven extensive experience in the following areas:
  • web development including PHP, HTML, JavaScript/jQuery and CSS;
  • integrated plug-ins and writing new plug-ins to extend the Moodle system core features;
  • data management and query building using MySQL and other RDBMS;
  • GIT Source Code;
  • XML data structures and Web services.
• Proven expertise in Customizing Moodle functionalities and Developing Custom Themes for Moodle.
• Excellent command of English, both spoken and written, is mandatory. French would be a plus.
• Excellent communication skills and experience working in multi-lingual environments are thus highly desired.
