The Global Solution Center for Consumer industries is located in Huizingen, Belgium and specializes in robot-centric automation solutions for e-commerce, retail, fresh food, non-food and express parcel segments.

As part of the Research & Development team at the global solution center you will be directly involved in the development of modular applications that are offered as alone standing solutions or which will be part of larger engineered solutions for ABB end-customers.

As a Robotics Engineer you will have the responsibility for the robot scope of one of the R&D projects on the engineering (including robot path planning), validation and meeting the KPI’s.

The R&D team works in close cooperation with the product and portfolio management to list the market and product requirements and to implement these in an efficient and economical way.

The development team consists of a diverse mix of development functions in robotics, software, vision and controls. In your role you will work specifically on Robot code development for specific application. Further you will work actively with all of the other functions and be expected to actively provide input and feedback on on-going developments.

Your responsibilities

  • Translate market requirements into product requirements
  • Work out the functional design (Robot part of the system)
  • Perform the technical analysis in order to design engineering documents like flowcharts, interface specifications and communication diagrams
  • Define automation components (hardware, sensors and actuators) which are required to control the robot gripper and other peripherals
  • Carry out tests in context of “Proof of Concept” set-ups
  • Responsible for robot code development (ABB Robot Studio) and third party path planners
  • Besides the focus on Robot and robot software acquire basic knowledge on the C# .NET software tools
  • Define and write test plans
  • Coordinate supplier prototype testing
  • Perform in-house simulation and in-house commissioning in our workshop
  • Execute on-site commissioning for pilots
  • Validate test plans and contribute to the execution of integration tests
  • Write documentation and provide training

Your background

  • An Engineering degree in electromechanics, electronics or automation (or equivalent by experience)
  • Strong mechanical reasoning capabilities to visualize work output
  • Experience with robot programming, in particular Rapid is an asset
  • Willing to follow a training programs within our Training Academy regarding our Robotics standard
  • Solution, pragmatic and hands-on mindset
  • Detail oriented with good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Team player
  • Able to take framework constraints into account and build creative solutions
  • On site presence required in Huizingen with 10 to 15% traveling abroad
  • Fluent in Dutch or French with a good knowledge of English
