Context
Orange Belgium, the third mobile operator in Belgium, became in 2015 a convergent player by proposing Digital HD TV services and very high speed internet access (>100Mbps). Orange Belgium is now the first “Cable Virtual Network Operator” in the world to propose its own TV & Internet services on its own branded CPE’s using the HFC network from others cable operators. Thanks to innovative & patented technical solutions and a bold commercial approach, Orange Belgium has now more than 380.000 convergent customers.
To further extend its product portfolio with multi-gigabit broadband services and increase its enterprise value, Orange Belgium is preparing the arrival of Fiber To The Premises. FTTp will be complementary to existing HFC solutions. Two years ago, Orange Belgium started a pilot with partner Fluvius in 5 cities in Flanders to evaluate FTTp. Fluvius is in charge of deploying fiber with an open Passive Optical Network architecture, the only solution enabling a clear separation between passive layer (fiber, civil works,…) operated by “NetCo” and active layer (FTTH OLT, IP, …) operated by “ServiceCo”. Every ServiceCo’s sharing the same passive infra are totally independent to deploy & operate their own active services (GPON, XGSPON, others..) on their own CPE’s.
Orange Belgium is now preparing the industrialization of this FTTp Proof of Concept by designing, selecting suppliers & preparing the deployment/roll-out of active FTTH infrastructure.
