Job Purpose
As part of the Catalyst Design Team, thePackaging Prototype Technicianwill support with the production of physical prototypes at Amcor’s Innovation Centre Europe, based in Ghent.
The Packaging Prototype Technician will work alongside the Packaging Prototype Engineer and will be responsible to produce flexible and/or semi-rigid packaging prototypes, either unique pieces or multiples.
The objective is to make the packaging prototypes with great care and a high level of detail, by using the technical equipment in the Catalyst Prototype Lab, whilst always taking in account the Amcor safety standards.
While prototypes making is the core responsibility you will also build up general packaging knowledge and expertise to produce a broad variety of packaging prototype formats.
The prototypes will be made with recyclable-ready structures that support Amcor’s Pledge, this is “to design all our packaging to be recyclable or reusable by 2025”.
Job Dimensions & Scope

- Work together with the Packaging Prototype Engineer, who will create the prototype instructions and develop new prototype formats.
- Support with the execution of single or multiple prototypes according to clear instructions and by specific order. You will receive detailed information including all job details, complete dates, materials used etc.
- The prototypes are unique pieces made by a combination of cutting, printing, laminating, folding, sealing, welding, vacuum forming and lacquering of the flexible and/or semi-rigid films.
- Typical packaging formats to prototype will be sachets, stick packs, flow wraps, pillow bags, stand-up or gusted pouches, quad-sealed or flat-bottom bags; but also thermoformed & sealed trays, skin wraps…
- The packaging prototypes are produced manually or with the use of the technical equipment in the Catalyst Prototyping Lab including laser-cutter, heat & impulse sealer, spout sealer, cup & tray sealer, vacuum former, printer, laminator and many more.
- Support all the Amcor safety initiatives with the right process and by safe use of the equipment in the Catalyst Prototyping Lab.
- Manage the on-time delivery and proactively maintain a WIP report, keeps detailed records and any changes to orders that are in progress. Any changes that schedule or specification are to be communicated back to both internal and external customers in writing as soon as possible-where appropriate.
- Complete a quality review on the prototypes prior to their shipment to customers to verify customer expectations.
- Close and document all orders when complete and take / edit photos when appropriate and maintain a database for future reference.
- Prepare the final prototypes for secure shipping to internal or external customer.
- Keep the prototyping lab clean & organised and manage the prototype material stock.
- Attend the weekly Catalyst Prototype Review meeting and also participate in Catalyst Innovation Sessions when requested.
- Build-up knowledge and expertise on packaging line technology and learn the different material specifications and correct uses for the different packaging formats.
- Utilizes effective technical knowledge, communication skills, problem solving, decision-making and project management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science or an equivalent technical/scientific education.
- Experience with packaging production either as operator or as prototype technician.
- Working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Possible experience with graphical or CAD software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, ArtiosCAD
