Job purpose:

As GPS Champion, you will lead External Supply (ES) deployment of GPS (GSK Production System) masterplan driving the Continuous Improvement (CI) mindset. You define and embed the CI ways of working for the ES team (Quality and Operations) and for the business conducted between External Supply and the CMOs in the GSK Vaccines portfolio.

  • This role is an accelerator of the Continuous Improvement transformation across the GSK Vaccines network to deliver the GPS Vision: build capability so everyone in Vaccines, every day, improves their work in a systematic way, enhancing engagement and ownership, and delivering value for our patients.
  • The ultimate purpose of the GPS Champion role is to accelerate the adoption and deployment of the GSK Production System, reducing defects and variation, creating efficient processes and building capability in GPS methodologies within every team.
  • The GPS Champion focuses the organization on making Continuous Improvement (CI) a priority, making process performance visible, and on the relentless elimination of variation and waste, to result in sustainable improvement of the performance of External Supply.
  • This role ensures the effective building and translation of the GPS Vision based on capability, ownership, and business outcomes into specific GPS Masterplan for External Supply and ensures its flawless execution.
  • This role includes the accountability for engaging External Supply leadership and employees at all levels, for building the CI capabilities, for creating ownership and imbedding CI in our DNA, for successfully delivering against the annual GPS Masterplan activities, and for ensuring sustainability of CI.


This role is also responsible for driving the External Supply’s EHS and sustainability strategy.

Your responsibilities:


You work in close collaboration with the head of Performance Office to establish the mid and long-term objectives, as well as the annual plan for the GPS and CI deployment in External Supply.

  • The GPS Champion drives Continuous Improvement roll-out in line with the GPS Masterplan defined in External Supply
  • Works and engages with ES Leadership Team to develop the GPS Masterplan based on its strategy and goals detailing how GPS can bring the most business added-value. They collectively own the GPS Masterplan.


You work in close collaboration with the head of Performance Office to establish the dashboard and associated indicators necessary to drive the performance of ES and support the monitoring

  • Ensure the deployment of the best-known methods in the GPS starting with a strong focus on Visual Management that will allow the teams to identify variability & wastes in their work.


You act as a mentor and coach, working together with the CI Central team, to develop progressively External Supply’s Lean Six Sigma ecosystem to tackle special and common issues:

  • Build CI capabilities at different Lean Six Sigma expertise levels in line with the GPS Masterplan. This includes the deployment of a coaching approach between Black Belts – Green Belts – Orange Belts
  • Continuously practice & evolve CI skills


More specific responsibilities within the External Supply Team :

  • Engage with the ES LT and communicate with the wider team about successes linked to the deployment of GPS and the CI mindset.
  • Act as an ES LT member and engage with the ES leadership team and the wider team to drive external supplies’ objectives and performance, as well as ensure the team’s wellbeing.
  • Actively support the team in defining the yearly priority CI projects at each CMO.
  • Actively support and coach the team in the investigation and resolution of missed performance and variability with high impact.
  • Coach the colleagues engaging in orange and green belt training and certification.
  • Ensure CI is visible everywhere throughout all site processes.

You escalate to the ES leadership Team major constraints or conflicting activities that will not allow the execution of the Plan.

  • GPS Champions are vocal “advocates” of CI:
    • Challenge status-quo of operations within External Supply
    • Identify new opportunities for CI.
    • Support the ES team in communicating successes and good practices to the GSK community

You actively participate in the GPS Champions network (weekly calls, 2 or 3 F2F meetings per year, travel to other sites) and use the network to:

  • Determine, implement and ensure adherence to common language & tools within External Supply
  • Ensure External Supply implements best practices & best-known methods
  • Learn from other deployments across the network and build these learnings into the External Supply CI strategy


You establish a network with GSP champions in other GSK External Supply teams to benchmark, learn, and share learnings relative to the externalisation business in GSK

You work with the External Supply leadership team and EHS partners from the different regions to define the EHS strategy and yearly plan for the ES team on the one hand, and with the CMO network on the other hand

You define, track and communicate the indicators to monitor the deployment and performance of the EHS plan

You actively engage the ES leadership team and wider ES team on the priority of EHS, and help develop EHS capability

You understand the GSK expectations with regards to sustainability and work with the ES LT to establish the plan of action with the portfolio of CMOs

You partner up with the SRMs to learn, share and influence the CMOs with regards to EHS and sustainability to establish risk profiles, action plans as necessary and performance indicators linked to those key drivers

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with the following required skills to achieve our goals (must-have):

  • University degree in Engineering or equivalent expertise in Civil, Chemical or Biologicals engineering
  • Life Sciences, Engineering or MBA
  • Need technical understanding of the complex GMP manufacturing environment
  • Advanced Degree in Life Sciences or Engineering completed with qualifications or business background with MBA.
  • Min 10 years’ experience applying strong influencing skills
  • Min 10 years’ experience in Production, Supply, Quality, R&D, or MSAT/Engineering
  • They need to be able to influence their site/ function leadership team and colleagues to challenge the status-quo and develop site/ function Lean Six
  • Sigma ecosystem capabilities and CI mindset in alignment with the local GPS Masterplan.
  • Understanding of EHS rules, sustainability and advocate of the GSK ambitions


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics it would be a plus:

  • Strong learning agility and coaching capability as well as collaborative mindset
  • Strong development capability – ability to move on a future senior leader position
  • Proficiency in six sigma / lean – Green Belt certified (Black Belt is definitely a plus).
  • Should be a strong influencer within current site / function. A leader of change, with a successful track record, credible and trustworthy
  • Strong project management and communication skills – must be able to self-manage and self-organize work activity typically in strong succession plan position
