About Cobalt and Specialty Materials (CSM)

Mastering the cobalt and nickel value chain. Umicore’s expertise covers the sourcing, production and distribution of cobalt and nickel products. Umicore’s materials are important in everyday items such as rechargeable batteries, tools, paints and tyres. Our recycling and refining processes give new life to cobalt and other metals and reduce environmental impact. To keep meeting our customers’ requirements, we cannot stand still. We need to discover new methods, invent new solutions and develop new ideas.

What you will be doing?

Within the vision of RISE 2030, the vision of Umicore Olen, and the vision of Cobalt & Specialty Materials Olen, you -as Head of Project Engineering- will ensure realization of the CSM and Site Capital project portfolio, the projects of the other Business Units on site according to the agreed upon scope, budget and timing and lead the Project engineering department with respect to people and processes to realize the total project portfolio without recordable injuries (cfr. GoToZero Harm)!

You will report to the Director Operations of CSM Olen.

Your main responsibilities :

• Organize the Project Engineering department (with focus on people, processes, tools, …) into cost-efficient and agile support activities in alignment with the needs and expectations of the Olen Business Units and the Olen Site.
• Introduce Agile Project management process for projects with volatile outcome next to the traditional Project excellence process for projects with fixed scope.
• Further develop and retain the necessary competent resources and set up an external engineering partnership in order to be able to realize the high capex investment projects the coming 3-5 years in the frame of RISE 2030.
• Set up a close collaboration with the respective BU’s and provide the necessary know-how, processes, tools and human resources to support the development of their strategic projects.
• Implement Good Leadership (“Zorgend Leiderschap”) in the Project Engineering Team of CSM Olen :
  • Select, recruit, coach and actively develop team members (internal and external), evaluate their performance and take corrective measures. Offer them career opportunities
  • Make sure that all the employees are qualified and trained for their job and provide the necessary tools, training and development
  • Stimulate a sound team spirit within the different teams, motivate and empower the employees
  • Handle the interpersonal conflicts between team members (internal & cross departmental) and with other stakeholders
  • Give direction and objectives to the teams and optimize ownership and commitment
  • Be responsible for the safety and health of the people working in the Project Engineering department and the constructions sites
  • Ensure that all legal and plant EHS-regulations are applied

Who we are looking for

• You have acquired a master of Science in Engineering / Master in Engineering or equivalent
• You have a sound industrial experience (+ 10 years of which 5 years in an engineering, technical or production environment in the process industry). You have at least 5 years of experience in a supervisory role
• You have proven Project Management skills from concept to realisation and project closure
• You are technically proficient in the different subject areas (mechanical, electrical, civil, automatization, materials) to understand and coach the Project Managers
• Proven skills and insight in overarching asset management principles
• Good knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS-Projects
• You are a good organizer passionate about delivering results and meeting customer expectations
• You are able to take decisions and to initiate actions with a creative and pragmatic approach
• You have good written and oral communication skills
• You show strong leadership and people management skills, both hierarchically and in multi-functional matrix organisations (building team spirit, support the team and all individual members of the team, conflict management, supporting growth, effectiveness and personal work satisfaction):
• You are proficient in Dutch and English, speaking and reading French and German is a plus
