WE ARE:

The European Commission’ science and knowledge service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) offers a vacancy for a Scientific Project Officer. The jobholder will be responsible for developing new, European-wide standards (both documentary and physical test materials) for the detection of security threats (explosives and chemicals). The jobholder will have the opportunity to establish themselves as an expert in the harmonised, reliable testing of detection equipment at European level.

The current vacancy is in the Directorate for Space, Security & Migration in Geel, Belgium,within the Transport and Border Security Unit.

The tasks of the successful candidate will be:

  • laboratory-based development of test materials and testing methodologies;
  • testing of equipment;
  • providing training and support to frontline security practitioners;
  • regularly interface with EU and Member States’ regulators to provide technical advice;
  • interact with manufacturers of detection equipment during the development of standards.

WE LOOK FOR:

  • We look for an analytical chemist with a PhD who can apply laboratory expertise to the development of robust, field-deployable test kits and testing methodologies for benchmarking the performance of detection equipment;
  • prior experience with chemical detection techniques (e.g. ion mobility spectrometry, Raman, infra-red) is not essential, but would be an advantage;
  • excellent communication and inter-personal skills are essential, in order to interact with a wide variety of stakeholders, including providing training to frontline security practitioners.
  • Good knowledge of English (level B2) is required as well as another EU official language.
