Job Title: Social Media and Communication Intern
Level: Intern, Professional immersion internship contract (6 months, paid)
Duration: October 2021 - March 2021
Location: European Cancer Organisation office, Rue d’Egmont 13, 1000 Brussels and teletravail during Covid-19 pandemic period (internet and home workspace required)
Starting date: October 2021
Department: Communication and Community
Official Working Hours: 09:00-17:00 (37.5 hours/week)
Job Objective
The Social Media and Communication Intern supports the Communication and Community Manager to deliver continuous and outstanding service and products to stakeholders in the cancer community, including Member Societies of the European Cancer Organisation, its Patient Advisory Committee and our partners. He/she is interested in gaining experience in a dynamic and fast-paced marketing and policy communications environment. The working language at European Cancer Organisation is English.
About the Organisation
The European Cancer Organisation is a not-for-profit federation of 36 Member Societies working in cancer at a European level, together with 20 European Patient Advisory Committee members through nine Focused Topic Networks. The Mission of the European Cancer Organisation is to reduce the burden of cancer, improve outcomes and the quality of care for cancer patients, through multidisciplinarity and multiprofessionalism. As the not-for-profit federation of member organisations working in cancer at a European level, the European Cancer Organisation convenes oncology professionals and patients to agree policy, advocate for positive change and be the united voice of the European cancer community.
Main Responsibilities
  • Work with the Communications and Community Manager and Policy and Advocacy team to implement the social media strategy and policy communication plans
  • Coordinate the creation and distribution of marketing collateral such as social media content, newsletters, e-blasts, website content, advertising or other communication tools
  • Together with the other members of the Communications and Community Team, come up with fresh, innovative ideas for both formats and contents of communication tools
  • Responsible for keeping promotional materials updated and maintaining relevant social media accounts (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube)
  • Research, identify and follow-up on potential partners for barter exchange of services to promote and enhance exposure of European Cancer Organisation activities
  • Advertising planning and follow-up
  • Work with external suppliers
  • Follow-up/report on communication status for specific projects
Description of the Relationships
  • Reporting to the Chief Executive and, on a day-to-day basis, the Communication and Community Manager
  • Close collaboration with the Policy and Advocacy Team
  • Close collaboration with the Operations and Projects Team
Skill Specification
  • University degree in Communication and PR, marketing, political science, social science, journalism or any related disciplines preferred
  • Strong analytical and communication skills – fluency in English, with proven writing skills; knowledge of additional languages is desirable
  • Must be able to work independently, think critically and have excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Be a team player with a strong work ethic, able to follow internal and external workflows with precise deadlines
  • Enthusiastic and positive with excellent inter-personal skills, who enjoys supporting colleagues and taking on additional tasks and responsibilities as required
Profile & Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.
  • Computer and internet literate
  • Additional educational qualifications, experience in social media management, interest in EU affairs and adequate knowledge of one or two more languages are considered assets
Internships are remunerated on a level comparable to the internship programmes offered at European institutions. As we anticipate that our organisation will be growing in the coming years, there may be future employment opportunities for successful candidates who demonstrate their ability and commitment in the role.
