The Janssen Clinical Innovation (JCI) department reports into Global Development (GD) and is dedicated to driving innovation into the clinical operating model to make clinical development faster and better for patients, investigators, Janssen, and the industry at large. JCI’s approach is to learn through doing: we design and conduct demonstration projects that generate knowledge about novel operational models and methods. These projects identify and test novel approaches, processes, technologies and best practices that have the potential to reduce trial set up and execution cycle times, and/or reduce cost; generate conclusive results to make the business case for scale-up or adoption of new technologies capabilities or approaches. These projects are executed in close collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders and can also be in collaboration with public/private partnerships. Once proven valuable and feasible, we scale and embed new operational approaches and technologies into Janssen R&D with the goals of improving patient and site experiences, expediting drug development, and reducing overall costs. The position is accountable for the successful delivery of JCI innovation initiatives. The role may oversee larger, more complex projects and provide project oversight and direction to other Innovation Leads.

Key Responsibilities:

  • leading the development of a strategy and project plan and will build a cross-functional project delivery team for a portfolio of transformational projects that supports delivery of innovative clinical development. These projects will be executed in close collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders and can also be in collaboration with public/private partnerships.

  • acting as a partner and change agent within the organization and help business stakeholders envision necessary transformation and identify required process changes to support the future in complex and undefined situations that may not be addressed by existing policies, procedures, or protocols.

  • developing the business case, including qualitative and quantitative value for the key stakeholders, to support broader implementation within the organization.

  • identifying key clinical operational challenges, in collaboration with the Therapeutic Areas (TA), and will define a clinical innovation strategy with potential solutions, initiatives and communications which fulfill the needs of the TA (act as Single Point of Contact, SPOC, for a TA).

  • surveying the competitor and external partner landscape to identify new opportunities/industry trends for innovative approaches and will develop and/or support key relations and collaborations with external partners/academic institutions to co-develop and drive innovative clinical development solutions.

  • May involve serve as the lead of an emerging focus area, an innovation methodology domain, and/or have line management responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be a forward-thinker, able to imagine the future of clinical research and design and execute informative demonstration projects to prepare Janssen for this future. The candidate will have extensive experience in global clinical development and a track record of successfully initiating and driving complex projects to completion. A global mindset with proven ability to partner cross-culturally and cross-functionally, to develop strong collaborations and to inspire trust across the organization and at all levels is essential.


Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business or life sciences is required; An advanced degree is preferred (Master’s/PhD/PharmD degree) with a minimum of 10 or more years of total business experience is required
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in global clinical research either in a CRO, Pharma, or other clinical trial sponsor environment is preferred
  • Experience in a lead role related to a strategic business or organizational improvement initiative is preferred.
  • Familiarity with and interest in health technology and health information technologies is required; direct experience with health information technology, healthcare technology, and mobile health applications is highly preferred.
  • Experience with real-world evidence and data sciences is preferred.
  • Experience contributing to innovative analytical solutions is preferred.
  • A Self -starter with strong results orientation, who can operate independently and can navigate complex, matrixed environments is required.
  • Proven experience in executing complex projects from start to finish is required.
  • Outstanding communications skills, both written and oral, capable of effectively summarize abstract concepts into clear, concise and insightful business cases.
  • Experience collaborating successfully with global clinical teams, R&D Operations, Therapeutic Areas and Medical Affairs is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, project management and influential management skills, complemented by a “hands-on” operational and business planning orientation is required.

  • Ability to partner and influence without authority with leaders at all levels globally and locally
  • This position may have up to 25% of regional/global travel.
