The Medical Imaging Research Center (MIRC), a joint initiative of the University and the University Hospital of Leuven, is looking for a full-time PhD candidate. At the MIRC, researchers with a clinical and engineering background work together on projects related to imaging in all fields of medicine, including cardiac imaging. Our cardiac imaging research group has a long track record in myocardial function analysis using a wide range of imaging modalities including echocardiography and cardiac MRI. The PhD candidate will be an essential member of a team of enthusiastic researchers with an international profile. The promotor of the PhD project holds a FWO research mandate and is therefore able to provide ample supervision and guidance during the course of the PhD. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences: The Department is situated on the Biomedical Campus of KU Leuven. It has the entire range of competences from basic science, over pre-clinical modeling to applied clinical and epidemiological research, taking a systems approach to the complexity of cardiovascular disorders. The University: KU Leuven offers a stimulating environment for international students and support for junior scientists to achieve their ambitions and in career development.

Project

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a well-established device therapy for patients with heart failure and a conduction delay. Patients are selected for CRT based on international guidelines. Unfortunately, a third of patients who receive CRT do not benefit from the therapy. Some studies suggest that such “non-responders”may be at an even higher risk of death due to the inappropriate treatment. Our goal is to identify biomarkers using echocardiography that would allow clinicians to better select patients for CRT. We are currently testing two specific biomarkers (apical rocking and septal flash) as patient selection criterion for CRT in comparison to current guideline criteria in a randomized,sham-controlled trial conducted in over 15 countries. With the trial results we aim to influence the international guidelines and ultimately improve patient management and outcome.

This project provides you the unique opportunity to perform clinical research in the combined fields of cardiovascular imaging, heart failure and device therapies. You will be responsible to oversee the trial, perform image and data analysis and disseminate trial results through article writing and presenting at international conferences. In addition, you will be responsible for patient inclusion and follow-up at the University hospital of Leuven.

Profile

We are looking for someone with a medical or biomedical background who is enthusiastic about cardiovascular imaging, myocardial function, and pathophysiology of the heart.
We need someone who is organized, a team-player and collaborates with international partners.
Proficiency in English and excellent communication skills are mandatory.

Offer

We offer a 4-year PhD position in an experienced, international, multidisciplinary research team with a strong focus on imaging function and pathophysiology of the heart.
You will become familiar with all non-invasive cardiac imaging modalities, the latest technology for image processing and analysis and the latest high-end imaging equipment.
You will obtain in-depth knowledge on running large scale scientific studies, data handling, image analysis and statistics.
Attending and presenting at international conferences will be an integral part of your work.
