Summary

This position is a Senior Principal Packaging Engineer position within Baxter’s Integrated Supply Chain Engineering team. The position will be located at Baxter’s Alliance Park, Belgium facility and report into the Global Packaging Center of Excellence (COE) in Round Lake, Illinois USA. This position will supervise direct reports (also located in Alliance Park) and as a group, function as the EMEA Regional Packaging Support Team.

With minimal supervision, your role will consist of performing sustaining engineering activities on current product packaging and packaging processes with priorities based on quality and compliance, continuity of supply, and cost savings initiatives. In addition, there will be opportunities to support new product development teams by acting as an extended team member to provide the design, development and verification testing of new product packaging and assist the manufacturing plants in qualification of new packaging processes.

Successful execution of these activities aids Baxter in achieving its goals for quality levels, cost savings, and new product introductions.

This position applies a solid understanding of theories/practices utilized in the field of packaging along with other disciplines outside the primary area of expertise toward the design, development, and qualification of new or enhanced product packaging and/or packaging processes.

One of the benefits of this role is the responsibility of supporting packaging for a variety of Baxter products including flexible IV solution containers ranging from 25mL to 6L in size, packaging for glass vials/bottles, a variety of sterile and sterile fluid path disposable sets/devices, and hardware devices and components. Due to the breath of Baxter’s product portfolio, the result is an exciting opportunity to be exposed to several types of packaging materials and processes including flexible and rigid films, barrier films/pouches, corrugated design and protective packaging, thermoforming, flow-wrap, form/fill/seal, printing technologies and other related packaging processes.

You will be communicating and collaborating with colleagues around the world in various functional groups, such as Product Owners, Procurement, Quality, Marketing, Stability, Sterility, and many others including engaging with Baxter’s manufacturing facilities. This position will provide opportunities for travel to the manufacturing plants and packaging suppliers in order to support project assignments allowing for on-site learning and networking.

Your performance will be measured based on how successful you are in accomplishing assigned goals. Examples include achieving implementation and identification of packaging cost savings targets, meeting key program milestones, and solving technical issues.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning and execution of packaging projects within the EMEA region for a variety of project types including Quality/CAPA, Regulatory Compliance, Supplier Notices of Change, Cost Savings, and New Product Introductions at various manufacturing facilities.
  • Lead projects with increased complexity and scope and be required to effectively manage multiple projects with minimal assistance and supervision. May lead a large scale program or several small projects with complex features.
  • Develop protocols for testing and engage in Change Control activities interfacing with multiple functional groups, including manufacturing plants and suppliers in a team environment to execute packaging changes.
  • Approve new packaging materials and systems, studying and recommending techniques to improve and/or cost reduce existing products/processes, investigating new sources for packaging materials.
  • Create packaging material specifications, associated drawings, and packaging procedural specifications to provide the required technical information necessary to support the product/packaging configuration.
  • Independently plan, schedule, and lead cross-functional team supporting packaging projects to achieved project objectives and milestones.
  • Expected to utilize subject matter experience to generate cost savings ideas by recommending new materials or design modifications and resolve packaging issues by using critical thinking skills and DMAIC techniques to solve complex problems.
  • Assist in the analysis/vetting process to determine if proposed cost savings ideas are viable.
  • Expected to help establish goals and strategy direction for the department.
  • In addition to your own responsibilities, you will be required to share experience/knowledge with less experienced engineers in an effort to help mentor them with project assignments and career growth.
Qualifications
  • Must have experience or advanced training and demonstrate proficiency in packaging materials and processes, problem analysis and resolution, statistical methods, and design of experiments.
  • Recognized as a technical expert by peers and other personnel.
  • Proficient in applicable change control and development methodology and processes required to execute packaging projects.
  • Successful track record of managing wide-ranging packaging projects possessing a sense of urgency and commitment to meet project milestones to ensure manufacturing plants and R&D teams achieve targeted goals.
  • Extensive cross-functional team experience, including technical and non-technical work.
  • The ability to deal with ambiguity and effective use of creative problem solving skills.
  • Embrace Lean Principals and utilize concepts such as standard work to drive continuous improvement.
  • Ability to organize and present technical and project management overviews without assistance.
Education And/or Experience

B.S. in Packaging or relevant Engineering degree (e.g., Mechanical, Chemical, Biomedical) with a minimum of 8 years of experience working in the field of packaging. A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience is desired.

Experience In The Healthcare Industry Preferred.
