Location: Ieper, Belgium (hybrid flexibility to work from home and the office)

About this Role and You:
You will be the champion of horticultural excellence and sustainability within the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). You will take ownership of horticultural operations, ensuring that all processes, from environmental management to maintenance strategies, are aligned with CWGC’s global standards. Additionally, you will lead the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives to protect and enhance our heritage sites while promoting resource efficiency.
You will own the horticultural policies, ensuring their consistent implementation across C&SEA in line with the operational Area Management Plan and global strategies. You will manage and direct initiatives across C&SEA to improve operational processes, efficiency, and sustainability in support of CWGC’s objectives. This includes overseeing the implementation of training programs, leading sustainability initiatives, and managing procurement strategies to ensure cost-effective solutions for horticultural needs.
To be successful within this position, you will have significant experience in horticultural management and sustainability practices. You will have a proven track record of leading teams, managing operational budgets, and delivering strategic horticultural initiatives. You will be a proficient communicator, skilled at collaborating with diverse stakeholders, and able to mentor and support your team to reach their highest potential. You will also have experience in overseeing health and safety protocols, as well as managing sustainability projects in a practical, results-driven manner.
You will be able to demonstrate
Proven experience in horticultural maintenance, ideally in a cemetery or heritage context.
Experience in leading and managing operational teams, including talent development and training.
A deep understanding of sustainability in horticulture and environmental impact reduction.
Strong financial and budget management skills, including procurement and cost control.
Expertise in risk management, ensuring the health and safety of staff, contractors, and visitors.
Ability to manage complex projects and collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders.
Technical knowledge gained through professional qualifications in horticulture, landscape management, or environmental sustainability.
