The Innovative Health (IH) Organization has been created to drive meaningful impact to participant health and wellbeing by reinventing the clinical trial experience. The Innovative Health organization connects teams across development to novel capabilities and solutions, unleashing the potential of innovation to drive broader access to innovative medicines, and enriching the healthcare experience for all.

As the Head of Development, you will be responsible for driving the strategic direction and overall effectiveness of the organization’s development process of innovative capabilities. This pivotal role requires a leader who is ultimately accountable for the execution and delivery of innovation initiatives, improving the value of the innovation pipeline into the business. You will have a deep understanding of business and business needs. You will lead the prioritization of innovation initiatives, in close collaboration with the TAs and Global Development to ensure alignment with the organizational goals and addressing the key challenges and opportunities. You will serve as the key partner to other functions in Global Development to ensure early collaboration, leading to seamless transfer of capabilities, methodologies, and technologies proven successful in demonstration projects. You will ensure that team capabilities are optimized to support the diverse subject matter expertise required.

The IH department reports into Global Development’s (GD) Business Growth, Innovation and Advocacy (BGIA) department and is dedicated to driving innovation into the clinical operating model to make clinical development faster and better for patients, investigators, Johnson & Johnson, and the industry at large. IH’s approach is to learn through doing: we design and conduct innovation projects that generate knowledge about novel operational models, methods and solutions. Once proven valuable and feasible, we embed new operational approaches and technologies into Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicines R&D with the goals of improving patient and site experiences, expediting drug development, and reducing overall costs. Key Responsibilities:

  • Define the strategic vision and objectives for the development function, aligning with the organization’s overall mission and goals.
  • Lead chartering and process development to determine return on investment, value, priority, risk assessment and agile execution of projects.
  • Inspire and motivate the team to achieve excellence and to prepare for launch of innovative capabilities
  • Monitor demonstration project progress, optimizing resource allocation and mitigating risks.
  • Foster a culture of accountability and results-driven decision-making
  • Evaluate and optimize the end-to-end development process, from identified innovative solutions to demonstrated capabilities with launch readiness.
  • Implement best practices, tools, and methodologies to streamline and improve efficiency.
  • Assess and adapt the development process to evolving business requirements.
  • Build strong relationships with senior leadership, department heads, and other key stakeholders to understand strategic priorities and business objectives.
  • Ensure that key partner input and feedback is sought and incorporated early in projects.
  • Act as a trusted advisor, providing strategic guidance and insights on how development efforts can support and advance organizational goals.
  • Champion a culture of collaboration and innovation, fostering cross-functional partnerships and knowledge sharing.
  • Attract, develop, and retain top talent within the team, fostering a culture of growth, and innovation.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to team members, empowering them to excel in their roles.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive work environment, where diverse perspectives are valued.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree in Business, Technology or Life Sciences is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • 15+ years of total business experience is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in global clinical research in Pharmaceutical, Contract Research Organization (CRO) or other clinical trial sponsor environment is required.
  • Extensive experience driving innovation and delivering results is required.
  • Deep understanding of business needs, clinical innovation, technology trends, and market dynamics is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate insights into actionable strategies is required.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and partner management skills are required.

Preferred:

  • Experience managing external and internal associates is preferred.
  • Experience leading a team of 5 or more is preferred.

Other:

  • This role may require up to 25% travel.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $142,000 to $244,950.

The compensation and benefits information set forth in this posting applies to candidates hired in the United States. Candidates hired outside the United States will be eligible for compensation and benefits in accordance with their local market.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.

Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k).

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

  • Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year.
  • Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year.
  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year.
  • Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year.
