The Public Affairs Director, specialized in Circular Economy and Climate, works to advance the interests of Mars Wrigley (MW) and its diverse portfolio of brands with bodies such as the EU, industry regulators, trade associations, and non-governmental public bodies. She/he liaises frequently with markets providing expertise on circular economy (e.g., packaging, recycling, carbon taxes, carbon labeling, environmental labeling, etc). The role covers MW operations across the globe.
The job holder advises the organization on plastics, circular economy and climate issues. This includes developing positions in collaboration with Mars corporate, advocacy strategies, and related analyses to advance Mars Wrigley business priorities, create business opportunities, and meet public policy objectives.
What will your key responsibilities be?
- Demonstrating your knowledge of and experience working with sustainability, circular economy and/or plastics issues, climate, including an understanding of the policy landscape for these issues, you will help MW businesses understand how legislation, regulations and other policy developments would affect MW interests.
- The job holder will develop and oversee a global advocacy strategy and support markets in topics like packaging EPR, plastics bans and taxes, carbon taxes, carbon labeling, and environmental labeling.
- Partner with cross-segment and corporate colleagues to build and engage a global external network of stakeholders supporting advocacy strategies.
- Enable MW global CA community in delivering MW/One Mars sustainable packaging and climate advocacy priorities at market level.
- Set principles and guidelines to guide each region to develop a plan to label packs as recyclable in alignment with industry wide initiatives such as “How2Recycle” (US) and “OPRL” (UK).
- Participate in relevant trade associations and/or industry coalitions in support to the Mars, Incorporated Public Affairs global team efforts to advance advocacy strategies in circular economy and climate.
- Identifying relevant partnerships with external third parties, incl NGOs, to help drive sustainable packaging and packaging waste solutions, in collaboration with the packaging sustainability team globally and in each region.
- Lead global/regional/local, functional, and cross-functional perspectives on issues related to circular economy and climate.
- Lead “issues mapping” across the globe, including a range of sustainability issues from climate to circular economy to human rights and deforestation. Ensure our issues mapping includes robust financial implications of non-action Assist in policy development and alignment across the organization to define MW’s public policy positions.
- Maintain an up to date heat map of market regulatory and customer risks and developments for plastics and carbon emissions in close collaboration with corporate and other segments
- Shape the Mars Wrigley narrative on our circular economy and climate commitments in close collaboration with Mars Wrigley Communications leads
- Publish an internal quarterly packaging sustainability newsletter highlighting Mars Wrigley progress and trends in packaging sustainability.
What are we looking for?
- Master degree is highly desirable
- Knowledge and philosophical alignment with the concept of the circular economy, and the ability to apply circular economy principles to advocacy projects.
- extensive work experience in innovative solid waste management, composting, recycling or closely related field and experience in government affairs.
- Familiarity with the challenges and issues related to recycling especially as these relate to the packaging.
- Knowledge and experience with climate policy developments globally and especially across the UK, EU, US and China
- Familiarity with carbon credit mechanisms and the policy improvements that will benefit the development of carbon markets in favor of the private sector.
- Experience with working with external partners from the NGO and industry communities.
- Knowledge of the legislative process and regulatory requirements around climate, composting, anaerobic digestion, and recycling across the EU and/or US.
- Project management experience with demonstrated success in managing both internal and external stakeholders.
- Adept in analyzing and interpreting data from in-house and third-party research studies.
- Demonstrated success in working with external stakeholders with an orientation to achieving win-win results.
- Excellent listening, diplomacy, facilitation, and consensus building skills mandatory.
