ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.
YOUR TASKS
The Maritime Technology Division (www.maritiem.ugent.be) is a research group within the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University. Their research is focussing on hydrodynamics of ships and other floating structures in general, and more particularly on the behaviour of ships in confined navigation areas. Additionally, the division is involved in research w.r.t. hydrodynamics of floating offshore wind and engineering aspects of aquaculture. The research group is also the coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus programme EMship (https://emship.eu/), a cooperation of seven European Universities. We are looking for a candidate interested in both teaching tasks within this EMship programme as well as within the Maritime Engineering programme of Ghent University as well as performing research on hydrofoiling vessels.
Hydrofoiling has been around since the early 20th century, but has become much more prevalent over the past decade on sailing vessels. The use of hydrofoils comes with some obvious advantages: a possibility for more efficient travel, higher achievable speeds, a less pronounced wave-signature... Examples of applications of hydrofoils are widespread: ferries, crew-transfer vessels, high-performance sail-racing vessels, surf-boards, pleasure crafts... The increased speed and the radically different way of sailing has however imposed new risks. The completely different dynamic behaviour of a vessel while airborne on foils in comparison to its buoyant state prompts a better understanding of the dynamic behaviour of these vessels but also on the dynamic load on these, mostly, composite hydrofoils. This understanding is necessary to optimise the dynamic stability and construction of these vessels and provide the necessary safety.
Within this research topic a new position is opened on the topic of the study of the dynamic behaviour as well as the loads on the hydrofoils. The candidate will operate from a hydrodynamic and numerical viewpoint, validated by experiments i.e. creating new data with CFD and validate these with existing test programs as well as updating the in house developed, open source code, Typhoon. The aim of the study is also to apply for a scholarship at the Research Fund Flanders (FWO).
It is therefore crucial for the candidate to check the eligibility criteria at Research Foundation - Flanders - PhD Fellowship fundamental research (fwo.be) (presently for call 2024, but no major changes are expected for call 2025), to name a few important ones:
- Having obtained the relevant MSc degree recently (March 2022 or later)
- Having a top academic track
Candidates that do not meet these criteria are still invited to apply, but should realize that preference will be given to candidates meeting the aforementioned criteria.
Candidates should be holding a MSc degree in Engineering in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering (or equivalent). Knowledge of Dutch is an asset, but not a formal requirement, as most of the research and education is done in an international context.
You will be supervised by the professors and post-doctoral researchers of the UGent Maritime Technology Division. Your default working place will be located in Ghent.
More information can be provided by prof. dr. ir. Evert Lataire (Evert.Lataire@UGent.be)
