Job Purpose and Impact

Join Cargill’s Core R&D team as Senior Fermentation Scientist, where you will be responsible for research and development on fermentation products and processes related to food ingredients, cultures, and probiotics.

In this role, you will work with a global multidisciplinary team on innovation projects. You will provide thought and execution leadership on fermentation and downstream process development at lab and pilot scale while partnering with stakeholders in R&D, business, engineering, and production.

Key Accountabilities
  • Complete initial scoping on projects to develop and optimize fermentation and downstream processes for the production of food ingredients or functional cultures, including recovery and stabilization.
  • Design technical work plans for complex fermentation and downstream processing experiments at lab or pilot scale.
  • Conduct or coordinate these experiments with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data.
  • Process, analyze and interpret complex lab, pilot or plant data to support sound data-driven conclusions.
  • Communicate experimental outcomes in reports and presentations to technical and business audiences, and provide recommendations for future work.
  • Maintain awareness of the external landscape, partner with business colleagues and provide thought leadership to identify new opportunities or state-of-the-art technologies for biotechnology R&D.
  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BSc degree in industrial microbiology, biotechnology, biochemical/bioscience engineering or a related field.
  • Confirmed working knowledge of scientific research principles, concepts, practices, and standards.
  • Knowledge and application of microbiology, microbial physiology and fermentation principles relevant to bioprocess development, scale-up and optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with lab-scale fermentation equipment and microbial techniques.
  • Knowledge and application of mathematical, statistical and quantification tools.
  • Good oral and written communication skills with peers, supervisors and managers (English).
  • Minimum of four years of work experience in the fermentation industry.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MSc or PhD degree in a related field.
  • Experience in technical leadership on projects in the biotechnology space.
  • Strong foundation in microbiology, aseptic technique and sterile design.
  • Experience with pilot or plant scale fermentation and downstream processing equipment.
  • Experience with probiotic or active culture development and production, including recovery, stabilization and preservation.
  • Knowledge of omics-based tools to screen, select and characterize organisms of interest.
  • Strong statistical foundation and numerical aptitude.
