The Flight Operations sustainability manager is responsible to further develop the sustainability strategy as well as the implementation of the strategy, identifying opportunities for continuous improvements with regards to sustainability in the different areas of flight operations. As a direct report to the Nominated Person Flight Operations (NPFO) this person works in close collaboration with the Flight Operations Management team to define and achieve the targets. Furthermore, the Sustainability Manager FOPS will be embedded into the sustainability framework of Brussels Airlines and will have to have a close collaboration with the Lufthansa Group, their sustainability managers and framework.

Environmental protection and sustainable development of the flight operations

• Proposes initiates and follows up on actions concerning sustainability such as fuel efficiency, climate protection, active noise abatement, energy and resource management. 


• Helps to implement an environmental strategy, focussing on FOPS but having as a consequence its effects in all areas- from operative activities and technical maintenance to procurement, facility management and administration (eg. engine washes, descent patterns, weight on board, sustainable taxiing, Cost Index, etc.)


• Champions sustainability with the other departments and supports with their sustainability process implementation


• In collaboration with Crew Training develop and implement training programs with focus on sustainability in flight ops (e.g. flight patterns)


• Is fully aligned with and jointly develops sustainability targets of the entire company


• Looks for continuous expansion of the environmental management


• Is involved in the latest technologies and innovations to continuously improves the sustainability of our operations


• Develops and aligns flight operation standards and processes on sustainability with the LHG


• Captures, documents, evaluates and communicates all relevant processes and activities with an impact on the (kerosene and freshwater consumption, emissions, noise, waste, and wastewater etc.)


• Calculate key indicators, which MB and Flight Ops can use to help improve the performance in environmental protection on a continuous basis

Follows up internal costs and looks for internal savings opportunities

• Find opportunities for safe, reliable, economical operation of Flight Ops (fleet and crew)


• Creates KPIs and dashboards to enable Flt Ops and MB to follow-up onoperational costs


• Coordinates and monitors Flight Ops and transversal projects focused on sustainability and cost efficiency


• Develops and aligns flight operations standards and processes with the LH group on operational efficiency

Optimizes, analyzes and executes cost efficiency, control verification, tracking and approvals related to fuel

• EU ETS CO2 data Monitoring plan - data collection & emission reporting


• Edit, adapt & deposit the EU ETS monitoring plan.


• Collect fuel data (own fleet + wet-lease in)


• Provide EU ETS data in case of wet-lease OUT.


• Correct fuel data.


• Report EU ETS volumes (internally+external).

• Initiate, manage & follow-up fuel efficiency projects over departments.


• Provide guidance on fuel efficiency projects (MBO - Managers -workfloor).


• Followtechnological advancements


• Represent Brussels Airlines Fuel Efficiency towards outside world and within LH Group.

• Engineering profile or equivalent through experience


• Professional experience of 3 - 5 years in the aerospace industry


• Written and spoken business English is essential


• Aviation licence as a plus


• Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, Powerpoint)


• Knowledge of XML & Spotfire/Tableau advantageous


• Good knowledge of the Operations Manuals


• Ability to transfer knowledge and leadership skills toward the team, with clarity in giving feedback, orally and written


• Experience with project management


• Strong analytical skills - potential to define long-term objectives and to translate these into mid & short term milestones


• Practical experience in the use of databases, -Reporting/KPIs/ Dashboard basic principles


• Basic knowledge of aircraft performance/aerodynamics/flight operations by professional or personal experience


• Passionate about the environment, flight operations and about continuous improvement


• Due to the daily work with operational/commercial/safety sensitive data, the ability to work very punctual and focused is essential


• Problem solving, analytical & responsible thinking in Flight Ops context are a must


• Takes initiatives and works independently


• Ability to show perseverance in the objectives, and agility in the way to reach them


• Conviction and the ability to break through resistance with logical reasoning
