Context and Mission

As a Technology Engineer Compressor Engineering (Product Development of Compressor Elements) you focus on research and development of parameters that influence the performance/performance capacity of (screw) compressors. The greatest optimizations and developments are possible in the field of Energy Efficiency.

Example: 80% of the cost of a compressor element in a total life cycle is energy cost, 10% purchase and 10% maintenance. That’s why customers are looking for a compressor that is more energy efficient.

R&D in Belgium

Product development, validation, testing and production mainly take place in Wilrijk (Antwerp) in Belgium.

Position in the organisation

Product Development / Product Engineering at Atlas Copco in Belgium consists of 6 Product Development teams, whereby this vacancy of Technology Engineer Compressor Engineering is located in the Airtec Core Components division. The screw compressor element is the heart of the compressor that converts mechanical energy into compressed air.

Team

You will be part of a product development team and join their mission to develop, improve compressor elements and provide expertise & support to integrate the designs into a complete compressor unit. A product development team consists of various project leaders, designers, technology and calculation engineers who are dedicated to the development of state-of-the-art compressor elements.

Responsibilities and Task Areas

  • After your initial training you will have the opportunity to take ownership and responsibility in your field.
  • You translate the functional product specification into design parameters, using our industry-leading expertise, by setting up the required test programs to identify further improvements. Together with a test team, you draw up the test plan, analyze test results, make recommendations for further improvement and qualify whether the product meets the specifications.
  • You develop new products, new elements for compressors based on customer specifications.
  • You build expertise on parameters that influence performance, as a member of the competency team, by relying on test results and calculations. You advise on the optimal design and use.
  • You stay informed of the latest developments regarding modelling, measuring and simulating the performance of the product. You identify opportunities to improve and/or expand our current calculation models and tools.
  • You participate in challenges: how can Atlas Copco design to work more cost-efficiently and energy-efficiently? How can we improve, challenge the status quo, pave the way, break paradigms, …?

Desired Knowledge and Experience

  • You already live in Belgium.
  • You have a master’s degree in engineering sciences (Civil Engineer), preferably with a specialization in one of the following fields: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Energy Engineering, Thermotechnical Sciences. A PhD in one of these domains is a plus.
  • You have some prior knowledge of thermodynamics; heat transfer, heat exchange, compression, adiabatic processes, PV diagrams, …
  • Some feeling with validation (FEA / CFD) and Design (CAD) is recommended.
  • Specific prior knowledge of compressor technology is an added value, but not a requirement.
  • You are interested in product development and mechanical energy technology, in particular in energy efficiency (whereby you pay attention to the energy cost, among other things).
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • You communicate fluently in English.
