The Role

The Materials Lab is a competence centre, which promotes research and innovation, and delivers high quality services in the field of materials, more in detail in the domains of Metals, Polymers & Composites, Coatings, Lubricants and Air, Gas & Water. Its team of talented scientists has a diverse background in chemistry, physics and/or material science. Its service portfolio is aligned to internal clients’ needs and the progression of the state of the art and consists of qualification, troubleshooting, co-development, R&D, advice, and training activities. Its competitive strength is based upon key knowledge, its application on compressor and vacuum specific problems and a customer centric approach.

The Materials Lab is looking for a Technology Engineer Lubricants. He/she has an in-depth and hands-on knowledge of organic chemistry, lubricants, lubrication and tribology. He/she delivers services to internal customers and carries out R&D projects.

What we expect of you?

Responsibilities
  • To initiate and carry out innovative R&D projects related to lubricants, from identification of the idea and application, through planning and execution, and coordinating a project team of colleagues.
  • To provide knowledge on sustainability (environmental footprint, circularity, hazardous chemicals,…), product cost, product performance and lifetime, and to critically take all these different factors into account in your R&D projects.
  • To perform lubricant testing & investigations, and deliver chemical-technical support to product engineering, process, production, service and purchase teams. Identify root causes of product failures, perform trouble shooting, qualify (new) lubricants or applications,...
  • To provide lubricant expertise and advice to internal clients.
  • To report results, methodology, conclusions, and recommendations and to clearly communicate about results, costs and planning to the management or the internal customers.
  • To follow up on new market developments for lubricants (literature, conferences, suppliers, competitors), and to translate these insights to opportunities for improved products and product performance. To follow up on new test equipment for lubricant qualification and condition monitoring.
  • To cooperate and communicate closely with other experts/colleagues (internal colleagues or clients and external laboratories, centres of competence and suppliers). To build a network with colleagues, research institutes, suppliers, and universities.
Educational Requirements & Experience
  • Master in Chemistry/Physics; Master in Industrial Engineering Chemistry; or equal by experience.
  • PhD is an important asset.
  • Experience in or knowledge on organic chemistry, lubricants, lubrication and tribology is an asset.
  • Fluent in English and good command of Dutch (or willing to learn).
