mateco is the leading provider of sales and rental of aerial work platforms such as boomlifts,

scissor lifts, forklifts...

In terms of rental mateco has a machine fleet of approximately 40.000 machines worldwide. mateco is active in 150 locations mostly in Europe (Belgium, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Poland...) but also in other locations such as Panama, Chile and Mexico.

Internally mateco is organised in different business streams: rental, trade (buying and selling machines), service (maintaining machines), planning (getting the machines to the customer and back to mateco), digital business... And all these activities are done by different operational companies (opco’s) who have knowledge of the local market and legal requirements.

The strategy of IT at mateco is to combine purchased software (such as Microsoft D365) with a lot of custom developed applications. We have an event driven microservice-architecture where we use Kafka to integrate everything. For our custom app development (Java+Spring+Angular) we go for a cloud native approach in the Google Cloud Platform. For most other topics like we are using Microsoft Azure Cloud.

In this IT environment we are also organized like the business: in different streams which in turn contain 1 or more software delivery teams. All those teams are all responsible to build, deploy and run their software in the cloud.

To help the different software delivery teams to manage their cloud infrastructure, we have a dedicated cloud team. They are the cloud expertise center which is responsible for our cloud architecture. They also provide shared cloud services to the different delivery teams. Maintaining our Kubernetes cluster, setting out best practices in regard to security, stability and maintainability. And guide the teams in setting up and optimizing their CI/CD pipeline with Docker & Infrastructure as Code (Terraform). In this team we have several dedicated Google cloud experts, and it’s in this team that we have an open internship.

The Cloud team is a scrum team which implies that there is a close collaboration with the different team members where every 2 weeks the team delivers improvements towards our goals. It’s the product owner of our team that sets the priorities so that you will always clearly know what needs to be done.

Is to collaborate with the colleagues in the cloud team towards our goals, being to support the delivery teams by improving our cloud architecture. The target state is what we proudly call our ’future cloud setup’. Making our future cloud setup production ready involves a lot of aspects and thus a lot challenges and opportunities to learn and develop your skills. A few example topics:

• Setting up an admission controller engine as policy checker to make sure not approved resources are rejected on our Google Cloud
• Integrate runbooks in our alerting setup so that if issues arise those are automatically resolved via automation
• Optimization of the matecoIT SDLC
• Roll out of DAST tooling
• Implementation of new supply chain security tools (Sigstore, Cosign, GitSign, ... )
• ....
