PhD student to work on the genetics of epilepsy using computational and statistical approaches on large multi-omics dataThe Weckhuysen team at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology, Belgium is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to work on the genetics of epilepsy using computational and statistical approaches on large multi-omics data. The Weckhuysen team performs leading-edge research in gene discovery and mutation analysis using short and long-read sequencing, transcriptomics, and iPSC-based disease modeling to better understand the genetic etiologies of intractable epilepsy.About The ProjectEpilepsy is a common chronic brain disease affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Despite major advances in therapy, 1/3 of individuals remain drug-resistant. Many also develop co-morbid behavioral and neurodevelopmental problems, making epilepsy a major public health problem. Epilepsy can have various etiologies, but especially in childhood-onset epilepsies genetics plays a central role. Over half of children who develop epilepsy will not have a definitive diagnosis using current genetic approaches. Making a genetic diagnosis is however key to providing effective and individualized therapy. We combine trios long-read whole genome sequencing with whole genome methylomics and transcriptomics to pin down novel genetic causes of disease. Recently, we have also begun analyzing cell-free DNA for unique methylation patterns and somatic mutations that can further explain the missing diagnostic gap.Your profileWe seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic, critical, and creative individual to join our team. The candidate should have a strong interest in bioinformatics, biostatistics, and genetics.Essential
