Principal Scientist

Health Science/Pharmaceutical Research

Rousselot is the global leader in producing gelatin and collagens. The collagen products of our leading Peptan brand are used as functional ingredients for dietary supplements and functional foods. Rousselot and Peptan are both brands of Darling Ingredients.

We are looking for a full-time Principal Scientist to join our expanding and dynamic R&D team. Within this role he/she will strengthen and accelerate the activities of R&D at Rousselot with a clear focus on New Product Development. He/she will participate in all aspects of R&D activities, including fundamental research, R&D strategy development, project management and communication to internal and external stakeholders, further assuring the alignment with other departments within Rousselot. Strong organizational skills, independency and leadership skills are essential.

You will work from our offices in Ghent/Belgium.

Area of responsibility and related tasks:

• Taking the lead in defined parts of the New Product Development program

- Creating innovative R&D concepts for new products, formulations and applications in alignment with the company’s research strategy

- R&D project management including overall coordination and planning (gap analysis, research strategy, budget, technical feasibility etc.)

- Development, implementation and validation of required research tools

- Guiding and assisting the R&D technical team

- Supervising PhD students involved in the project

- Active participation in scientific discussions and R&D meetings

- Critical data analysis and interpretation

- Support the translation of R&D concepts to pilot/production scale

• Communication

- Progress reporting to internal stakeholders including management

- Translating the research outcomes into project reports, scientific articles, marketing material

- Assisting departments such as Business Development, Sales, Marketing with scientific advice and analytical support

- Presenting at scientific or business conferences, at customer visits and events

• Building and maintaining a research network by

- Scouting for adequate technologies and partners

- Selecting academic and private partners and laboratories

- Ensuring communication at all steps

Profile:

• You have a PhD or equivalent through experience in health/nutrition/pharmaceutical science, bio-engineering or similar

• You have at least 4 post-doc (or equivalent) years of relevant R&D and project management experience, preferably in the industry sector (nutrition/pharma) including assay and/or new product development

• You have experience in cell culture, in vitro bioassays, pre(clinical) studies, peptide/protein biology and LC-MS analysis; experience in metabo/proteo/peptidomics and big data handling is an asset

• You have an analytical and result-driven mindset, business-oriented way of working and good leadership skills

• You have strong communication and negotiation skills to build internal and external networks

• You have excellent planning and organization skills

• You are willing to travel (20%)

• You have excellent knowledge of English (oral & written), knowledge of Dutch or French is an asset.
