The Senior IT Director, Head Research Platforms & Systems, is responsible for the overall technology strategy, project management, and application support & development for the Information Technology and Laboratory Applications in Janssen R&D research and process development laboratories.

This role will partner across scientific functions that operate laboratories including the Discovery Product Development and Clinical Supply (DPDS) global scientific function and the Therapeutic Area Research functions.

The Head of Research Platforms & Systems will: 1) partner with JRD Business Technology Leaders and business partners directly to define the research platforms and systems roadmap. 2) Globally drive the operational efficiencies of running and supporting the research platform portfolio. 3) Direct the definition and implementation of projects to leverage technology to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of laboratory science. 4) Define the project & release management strategy, including scope, schedule/timeline, resources, and budget, as well as have end-to-end accountability for the delivery of projects and releases. 5) Develop and grow a diverse talent pool of bilingual IT/Scientific associates.

The Research Platforms & Systems group is responsible for the following research platforms:
  • Molecular Registration
  • Inventory Systems
  • Electronic Lab Notebooks
  • Scientific Data Management
  • In-Vivo Systems
  • Laboratory Information Management/Lab Execution Systems
  • Data Acquisition Networks & Scientific Instrument Integration
  • Interfacing with Data Science &Informatics technology
This role will require education, experience and expertise in drug discovery and associated ways of working on a global scale, project management, portfolio management, analytics, systems integration, and system development a scale of billions of candidate molecule design.
  • Responsibility for both people (direct and/or indirect) as well as systems and projects. Lead a team of about 3 direct reports and ~25 total reports as a people leader, along with 20 contractors.
  • Report on the progress of workstreams/capabilities within scope of responsibility.
  • Develop a future roadmap for systems or capability areas within areas of responsibility and ensure the technical approaches and capabilities solutions are in-line with technical/business strategy including rationalizing and divesting legacy applications, migrating them to global platforms
  • Complete understanding and experience working within and leading an Agile development team.
  • Accountable for the day-to-day operation of Research Platform & Systems in partnership with Suppliers and Technology Services, ensuring that all tickets are resolved within SLA and change management processes are followed as defined in change management procedure and platformed is patched and upgraded to supported level.
  • Manage within the framework of established policies and procedures with accountability for all systems and their enhancements.
  • Provide evaluation and cost estimation for all Laboratory focused projects, enhancements and roll outs, including understanding of the business’s needs and priorities and provide system expertise.
  • Manage build, testing and production delivery for all relevant projects, enhancements and roll outs.
  • Direct creation implementation plans for relevant initiatives including timeline, owner, and key milestones.
  • Coordinate with BTLs and business partners to prioritize projects based on business value and risk compliance to maximize ROI.
  • Understand core internal IT products and drive business value by working with Suppliers like Waters. Biovia, Agilent, Perkin Elmer, Titian. Genedata and other vendors to gain understanding of future capabilities/enhancements and their potential applicability within the Janssen R&D environment.
  • Understand technology landscape within scope of responsibility, seek internal and external insights to craft technology approach and vision for the market(s)/cluster(s)/region.
  • Direct analysis of business problems, opportunities, and challenges, factoring in a deep understanding of the technical architecture and the underlying drivers of the business.
  • Develop a diverse talent pool and create a resilient organization that is agile and can support the changing strategy of Janssen’s scientific mission.
  • Assist in structuring and executing of Proof of Concepts and plans to scale and integrate in the broader system landscape.
Qualifications
  • Required Minimum Education: PhD degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline or a Bachelor’s degree with 20 years of direct experience.
  • Required Years of Related Experience: 15 years
  • Business Experience: Small molecule research in Discovery & Early Development and the associated IT system in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, large molecule experience is a plus.
  • A minimum of 10 years IT experience is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant and related experience in IT leadership is required.
  • Working knowledge of drug discovery and laboratory science is required.
  • Working knowledge of advanced discovery data models and integration solutions is required.
  • A proven track record of project delivery and business relationship management is required.
  • Understanding of R&D discovery and development processes are required.
  • Ability to translate business requirements to technology solutions is required.
  • Strong leadership skills – operate as an independent leader with understanding and appreciation of the global/enterprise context required.
  • Strong consultative and facilitation skills required.
  • Strong presentation skills – can speak across various forums and communicate to broad, diverse audience required.
