Retail Business Architect

Location: Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands or Belgium

Job Description

The Business Architect is a key customer-facing role within the Northern European Solution Engineering (SE) function. You will act as the senior domain expert to dedicated retail accounts on how the Salesforce Customer 360 platform fits into the business and IT architecture of a top retail customer or prospect. With a broad retail background including business, data and technical architecture as well as cloud computing, the Retail Business Architect will employ a consultative approach to map the transformation requirements of some of the largest retailers in the region to the optimal Salesforce solution whilst simultaneously doing so in a way that is sensitive to any particular cultural, legal, risk management & regulatory needs.

A Day in the Life

As the Retail Business Architect, no two days are the same. As an experienced player in the retail industry, you are a valued team member, collaborator, contributor and thought leader who will spend the majority of your time helping our top account customers on their digital transformation journey.

This said, a typical day may start with a team call where you share experiences and expertise with your colleagues in the wider North Europe Industry Solutions team of the latest trends on video/streaming Commerce in China and how retailers in your account list should respond. You will then start work on a presentation with the CIO of a global retailer in Denmark, using assets from the vast Salesforce repository as well as using your own creativity and insights to prepare a compelling and achievable view of their future. Just before lunch will be spent presenting your retail industry point of view to the Chief Digital Officer of another top account and debating new trends in AI in reducing the returns rate or improving email campaign open rates. You do this by making the seemingly complex simple and you speak in their language - not ours, by being a compelling communicator and an excellent storyteller.

In the afternoon, you will collaborate with our legal/IT security/Privacy or Product teams within Salesforce on how newly proposed European legislation might affect your large retail customers and prospects so that we can continue to demonstrate our core value of Trust. Later on that day, you spend some time working with the technical architects on refining the reference architecture for our clienteling solution which involves ISV and our core solution offerings.

Experience/Skills Required

A Industry Business Architect should have a deep retail industry alignment and knowledge within various retail sectors (ideally specialty, grocery and luxury). Further knowledge of related activities such as merchandising, payments, inventory management and store operations is welcome and will be looked upon favourably.

The individual should have a strong point of view, be able to discuss future trends and challenges and provide a Salesforce perspective on how these will be addressed. He or she should be comfortable discussing all aspects of the Salesforce solution set and possess advanced skills including awareness of how our cloud solutions can help the organisation to achieve their transformation objectives. The successful candidate will already be comfortable liaising with CMOs, Chief Risk Officers as well as CIO audiences in the retail setting.

You will possess a strong blend of technical and problem-solving skills and use a consultative approach to understand business and high-level technical requirements in order to help the Salesforce sales teams develop and refine a sales strategy and best Salesforce solution fit.

Additionally, you will have;
  • Concrete experience of a digital transformation project in the retail context in which you will have played a leading role.
  • A good understanding of the architectural principles of cloud-based platforms including SaaS, PaaS, multi-tenancy, multi-tiered infrastructure and the prevailing core applications.
  • A good understanding of the middle and back-office functions of retailers - particularly how they relate to the front office (store, marketing, service channels etc.)
  • A good understanding of Risk management in the mind of a retail leader, especially non-financial risk.
  • A good understanding of the entire sector-specific value chain. In other words, the non-distribution activities and how these relate to the sales/service/commerce etc activities.
  • Familiarity with major cloud offerings in the market and ability to discuss cloud architectures at a conceptual level.
  • Conceptual understanding of enterprise application integration, for example SOA, ESB, EAI, ETL environments and an understanding of integration considerations such as process orchestration, customer data integration and master data management.
  • The right to work in the Nordics and fluency in English. We have a strong preference for fluency in one of the local languages.
Additional Skills (useful But Not Required)
  • Some work experience in the technology sector, either as a vendor or user
  • Some pre-sales/business development experience from a software vendor, Systems Integrator or other consulting organisation
  • Experience with large scale ERP, loyalty, CDP or CRM projects in retail or you have “worn the pager” on these projects.
  • Previous practitioner and/or implementation experience of Salesforce solutions or relevant solutions in the retail ecosystem
  • Experience in (or of) the Enterprise Architect role in an organisation within the retail industry
  • General principles of network, application and information security
  • Knowledge of the Salesforce solutions for retail and how they compare with competitive offerings would be a distinct advantage.
  • Whilst not a technical role, we would appreciate that the candidate possess a good understanding of the security processes, standards & issues involved in multi-tier, multi-tenant web applications. Extensive product and personal training and development is provided, both as part of an initial 6 month ramp process and as part of Salesforce’s commitment to continuous learning and employee growth.
